Overview of Maitland

Often thought of as Orlando’s Historic District, with lots of history, art, and culture concentrated within this area. It also has the benefit of being in the middle of some of the area’s most popular communities, like Winter Park and Altamonte Springs. While a very large part of the area is residential, there are enough shops, schools, and parks to satisfy just about any type of resident.

Maitland is a suburban city in Orange County, and has a population of just over 15,000 according to the 2010 census. It’s also part of the Greater Metro Orlando area, which is one of the fastest-growing areas in Central Florida.

It’s very close to many popular Orlando areas and has easy access to I–4 and the 436 (two major roads that connect residents to just about anywhere in Greater Orlando), the traffic congestion can be a little much at times. However, with the Ultimate I–4 project underway, and lots of local roadways going through maintenance, engineers and road workers are creating new ways to deal with congestion. Backroads are also very common for locals, and many residents enjoy a more scenic drive around the various lakes in the community.

The History

Maitland’s rich history has impacted their culture, and the surrounding areas as well. The city is named after Fort Maitland, which was built in the early1800ss by Lake Maitland. The fort was torn down several years after it was built, and the nearby land was settled and became the basis for Maitland today. This community is one of the oldest incorporated suburban communities in the Central Florida area.

You can find a lot of art and culture in Maitland, due to the community’s focus on historical centers. The Maitland Historical Museum is one of the best in the Orlando region, and residents also have access to other popular historical locations, like the Maitland Telephone Museum and the William H. Waterhouse House Museum. However, for some of the most stunning architecture in the area, residents and visitors will definitely want to check out the Maitland Art Center, which combines nature, Mayan Revival buildings, and the nearby Lake Lilly to create some stunning vistas, and is home to many local events.

Maitland has many old, historical residences, and they’ve become a centerpiece of culture for this community. Some examples include the Thurston House, the Episcopal Parsonage, and the Hill-Stone House, all built over a century ago. On the weekends, you’ll likely find lots of homeowners and families out on the various lakes in the area, boating, fishing, skiing, and enjoying their time together.

While the area is primarily known for its residential areas, and its proximity to major metropolitan areas, Maitland has established itself as a perfect spot for many businesses and corporations.
