Ocoee comes from a rich history — settlers originally seeking refuge found a home near Lake Apopka, the region’s largest body of water. Here, they founded a small colony, which slowly grew into the society that we know today. The region became even more popular after the American Civil War, with many former soldiers settling in the area. The area was named Ocoee after the river that flows through much of Tennessee.
The average household income is a little higher than average, at just over $53,000, and many residents enjoy a quick commute to some of Orlando’s largest business centers, including the downtown area to the east and the Disney and Universal parks to the south.
The Ocoee area gets about 52 inches of rain every year, which is more than average. However, snowfall is nonexistent, and the average number of sunny days is much higher compared to most other states and regions. Summers are usually hot and humid, with July’s 92-degree average being the warmest. In contrast, the winter months are mild, with average lows at 50 degrees.

Ocoee is a largely suburban area, and this has created a culture that has a bit of everything. with just enough space to satisfy residents with rural desires, but plenty of people and things to do. In terms of shops and activities, Ocoee has plenty of family-friendly establishments, with some of the most beloved restaurants and grocery stores in the Orlando area.
Like most of Central Florida, Ocoee has a lake-friendly culture, and many houses and families spend their weekends fishing, water-skiing, and boating on the dozens of lakes spread out across the Orlando area. Ocoee has a major advantage when it comes to weekend and leisure activities, as it sits right in between Orlando and other rural areas, like Winter Garden and Clermont, that have more space and fewer people. This means residents can enjoy some time to themselves, but can still be downtown and in “the middle of everything” in just about 10–15 minutes.
The Ocoee area sits right next to one of Orlando’s most established educational facilities, Valencia College. Originally a community college, Valencia campuses are now all over the greater Orlando area, and offer a wide variety of classes and majors for both younger and returning students. Ocoee is also a short drive away from the University of Central Florida, one of the nation’s largest schools. The middle schools and high schools in the area are also very established and reputable, and younger residents have some great options for public and private schools.
