Overview of Sanford
According to the 2010 census, Sanford has a population of around 53,000 residents. Known as the “Historic Waterfront Gateway City”, Sanford was settled by Native Americans centuries before the surrounding areas. In the 1700s, the Seminole tribe arrived in the Sanford region, and the area was officially established by the United States Army in the early 1800s.
Sanford is about 20 miles north of downtown Orlando, and like the rest of Central Florida, enjoys warm, humid summers, lots of sunshine, and mild winters with no snowfall. In the early 1900s, Sanford grew rapidly, which allowed the city to “annex” it’s neighboring community, Goldsboro. This meant that Sanford and Goldsboro were combined, and the resulting city, still called Sanford, contained residents from both former towns.

Residents in Sanford enjoy a laid-back lifestyle centered around Lake Monroe, with a beautiful downtown area and tons of local shops, restaurants, and trails. The port off of Lake Monroe also has a marina, the Sanford Zoo (also known as the Central Florida zoo), and the Botanical Gardens, which is a hotspot for thousands of travelers every year.
Historically, Sanford served as a port city on the St. Johns River, and many local boats can still be seen entering and leaving the marina on Lake Monroe. In modern times, Sanford connects to Amtrak’s railroad system, while many road travelers prefer to use I–4, which runs right up through the center of the area. Other popular roads include State Road 417, which ends in Sanford, and can get commuters all the way down to Disney World in about 30 minutes. The Sunrail, which is a commuter railroad system, also has a new station in the Sanford area.
Sanford doesn’t just connect to other areas by land, but also by air — the Sanford International Airport, near the center of downtown Sanford, promotes travel into and out of Sanford to many other major locations throughout the country. In fact, the Sanford International Airport is the second-most popular airport in the Orlando area, and is a great alternative to the much larger and more crowded Orlando International Airport.
